No, the Gulf is not “dead”

June 1st, 2010 OAL No comments

I don’t know how pervasive this myth is, but I keep hearing various quotes about the Gulf being destroyed forever, or its dying, or whatever. While this is a devastating oil spill that should not have happened and BP should pay for it, here is some perspective.

Like the Deepwater Horizon spill, the Ixtoc 1 spill on June 3, 1979, involved the failure of a blowout preventer device, a kind of emergency shutoff valve. In both cases, metal domes put over the well failed to stop the leaks. - USA Today

So in 1979 off the coast of Mexico, a similar spill occurred. So what were the drastic repercussions of that spill?

The Ixtoc spill wiped out fishing along the Mexican coast for nearly two years.

Two years is a long time for fishermen who make their living out there… a tragedy, but far from a “dead Gulf of Mexico.” So obviously the 2010 spill is worse, right? Wrong. The current spill is about 20 million gallons…

The [1979] Ixtoc 1 leak spilled between 126 million and 210 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it second only to the intentional oil spill of about 462 million gallons caused by retreating Iraqi troops in 1991 during the Gulf War, according to the Interior Department.

If this spill goes on a while longer, it may surpass the Ixtoc leak in size, but don’t believe anyone that says a measly 200 million gallons of oil can “destroy” the frigging Gulf of Mexico. How many gallons of water are in the Gulf? Someone on Wiki Answers calculated it was this…

530,000,000,000,000,000

One way to say it would be 530,000 TRILLION.

Folks, the Gulf is going NOWHERE.

GREEN: a meaningless term invented by Communists

January 16th, 2010 OAL No comments

Just read the excerpt from the Associated Press:

Winemakers and grape growers who forgo pesticides, sow cover crops, reduce waste and energy consumption, provide workers health insurance, and are mindful of their non-farming neighbors will be able to distinguish themselves as certifiably sustainable under a new third-party audit system announced Wednesday by the Wine Institute, a public policy advocacy group.

The article is titled, “Red, White or Green? Calif. Wine Choices Expand.” So believe it or not, the term “Green” now also covers health insurance. Whether a company is considered “sustainable” depends on whether employees of that business are given health insurance.

I will not be nice here. If you have bought into the green nonsense for all these years, you are an idiot. WHAT DOES HEALTH INSURANCE HAVE TO DO WITH THE ENVIRONMENT? And you’re sustainable if you’re “mindful of your non-farming neighbors”? What kind of irrational babbling is this? Being “mindful” is now environmentally friendly.

The Green movement has NOTHING to do with saving the environment. At its best, it is a feel-good (but no good) meaningless movement to label some businesses as evil and hurtful and others as good and compassionate. At its worst, it is simply communism wearing the mask of environmentalism.

The Green movement supports electric cars and opposes gasoline cars, even though the environmental impact is identical. Electricity pollutes when it is created (with coal mostly) and is clean when used. Gasoline is clean when created and pollutes when used. There is no difference. The only way currently to make electricity cleaner is nuclear power… which the green movement opposes.

So why would the green movement support something that doesn’t prevent pollution and oppose something that does? Because the Green movement doesn’t give a crap about the environment. They hate capitalism. They hate corporations. Here’s a great excerpt illustrating the Green/Red movement:

At the 12/09 Copenhagen U.N. Climate Change Summit, Hugo Chavez, the nutty quasi dictator of Venezuela got huge applause. What new scientific data did he provide? Why was he even there at all?

He said the process in Copenhagen was “not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really an imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships.” [Rousing round of applause]

[There was a] “silent and terrible ghost in the room” [a ghost called capitalism] [even louder applause]

“our revolution seeks to help all people…socialism, the other ghost that is probably wandering around this room, that’s the way to save the planet, capitalism is the road to hell….let’s fight against capitalism and make it obey us.” [standing ovation]

Nevermind that the attendees all showed up to the conference in private jets that they supposedly think are killing the planet.

Nevermind that opposing drilling for oil in the U.S. simply exports the task to countries who don’t have an EPA, and therefore hurts the environment more than if we did it ourselves.

The Green movement does not care about the environment. The evidence is staggering.

Green movement is monumentally absurd

October 7th, 2009 OAL No comments

I simply can’t take it anymore. I cannot stand one more Energy.gov/tink commercial. The government is using Disney as propaganda for indoctrinating our children with green-ness. Here’s a list of some of the most ridiculous things I have heard or seen lately from the mainstream environmentalist movement:

  • Incandescent light bulbs will not be allowed after 2012… Thanks George W., you jackass.
  • Using soft toilet paper hurts the environment
  • Flying too much will cause humans to go extinct in 2055 (New documentary called The Age of Stupid, whose premier featured Gillian Anderson, Moby, Heather Graham, perhaps others)
  • Emails that say “Please consider the environment before printing this”
  • Using a metal water bottle instead of plastic to prevent landfills from getting bigger

Never mind that the “new” lightbulbs are more harmful to the environment. Never mind that toilet paper is such an insignificant source of waste in the world, and that it is essential to the general health of a society. Never mind that every single person who made the documentary and attended its premiere got there on a jet. Never mind that worrying about the effect of printing an email will have on the environment is like worrying whether your next fart will start a tornado. Never mind that you have to use chemicals to efficiently clean and reuse that new water bottle. All that matters is that YOU CARE. You agree that the environment is a sacred thing. We can’t survive without the environment, right? So anything we do to hurt it, however insignificant, is a crime. You don’t actually have to care about or effectively protect the environment. You just have to go through the motions, and that will make you a good person.

The vanity of eco-insanity is breathtaking. There have been hoaxes and scandals in the past, but never have I seen such a widespread psychosis as the Green movement. Otherwise intelligent people actually believe they can do something as insignificant as not printing an email, and they feel better about themselves. Self-worth has never been so cheap. It used to be you had to produce something, now you can just avoid doing something that some socialist told you would save the environment. No, I’m mistaken… it’s worse than that. You can just say you oppose something, and never actually practice what you preach, and media outlets will praise your activism. You don’t even have to change your behavior… you just have to say that everyone but you should change theirs. What a fantastic deal!

New sources of pollution

Otherwise intelligent Americans have been convinced that buying a Hybrid or electric car will help save the environment and also screw those evil Middle-Easterners and oil companies. Never mind that switching fuels is not all positive. Switching to electricity simply switches pollution from oil-based to coal-based. Half of America’s electricity comes from burning coal. And lithium fuel cells come primarily from the countries of South American dictators. You know how you can tell environmentalists don’t give a shit about the environment? How do we stop using oil and coal tomorrow? Nuclear power. They oppose it vehemently. Because of a meltdown they say, and the resulting radioactive fallout. Never mind that modern nuke plants use an enrichment level where that doomsday scenario is a thing of the past… they still oppose it. Why? Because they don’t oppose pollution. They oppose capitalism.

Does your neighbor who preaches Greeniness oppose capitalism? No probably not. The followers of the Green movement are just ignorant saps. The leaders are the anti-capitalists. They prey on general ignorance to form movements.

Earth plus plastic

I highly recommend watching George Carlin talk about environmentalism… while he is quite liberal on many topics, environmentalism is not one of them.

Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We’ve been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we’ve only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we’re a threat? That somehow we’re gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that’s just a-floatin’ around the sun?

The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles…hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages…And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet…the planet…the planet isn’t going anywhere.

Read the whole transcript here. My favorite quote is about plastic…

The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice towards plastic.

Environmentalists would have you believe that plastic bottles sitting in a landfill not degrading is a threat to life on this planet. Let me get this straight… plastic just sits still, does not degrade, and takes up space. Will someone explain to me the difference between a plastic bottle and a rock? The planet is covered with rocks, yet no one would suggest they are a threat to the environment.

Oil companies are NOT evil

May 14th, 2008 OAL No comments

I am so sick and tired of listening to people whine and complain about oil companies making too much money. The ignorance is staggering so here we go…

A CNN article claims oil companies have a profit margin of 9.7% which Ill round up to 10% for simplicity’s sake. Assuming a $4 gallon of gas, that’s $0.40. That means the other $3.60 is completely, utterly out of their hands. If you take away Big Oil’s profits, your gas will only go down by 40 cents. By the way, Google’s post-tax profit margin is more than twice that of Exxon, but you’re not mad at them for gouging.

Taxfoundation.org has an article linked in the above graph that states in the last 25 years Big Oil has sent $2.2 trillion (adjusted for inflation) to state and local governments. That is 3 times what they collectively earned. How can they send more money to the government than they themselves make? Simple, they make you pay for it.

When you get excited that the government is gonna punish oil companies, you are the one getting punished. When you increase the costs of providing a gallon of gas, the price will increase. You morons feel so much better sticking it to oil companies when in reality you’re sticking it to yourself.

T.S. Eliot inadvertently encapsulated liberals

December 21st, 2007 OAL No comments

“Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don’t mean to do harm– but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.” (The Cocktail Party, p.111)

Is this not PERFECT?!?! The most accurate part is “the harm does not interest them.” Liberals are constantly bragging about their good intentions with no regard for the results. The book Silent Spring is literally responsible for millions of deaths because of its condemnation of DDT, a valuable, effective agent for preventing malaria, but when used in excess it makes bird eggs a wittle thinner. Rachel Carson didn’t want to harm millions of Africans by preventing them from using small amounts of DDT to repel mosquitos; the harm didn’t interest her. She and present day liberals are more interested in ‘thinking well of themselves.’ They’d rather look and feel like they make a difference, despite the evidence contrary.
